Broadway refers to the Theater District in New York City, specifically the area between West 42nd and West 53rd Streets, including Times Square. This iconic stretch is home to 41 professional theaters, each with a seating capacity of at least 500 people, presenting a wide range of theatrical productions, including musicals, plays, and revues.
B is synonymous with the American theater industry, and its productions are considered the highest commercial level of live theater in the English-speaking world, rivaling London’s West End. The term “Broadway theatre” is used predominantly to describe these large-scale productions, which often feature elaborate sets, costumes, and music.
Historically, B has been a hub for innovative and influential musicals, with notable examples including Rodgers and Hammerstein’s works and the golden age of B in the 1940s-1960s. Today, Broadway shows continue to attract millions of visitors annually, with many productions transferring to international stages and being adapted into films and television shows.
